The purpose of this literacy kit is to provide a tool for volunteers and parents who are giving one-to-one help, and make the time they spend as effective and enjoyable as possible. The main principles on which the Learning to read toolkit is based is that children like to know they will be able to achieve the task they are given, and that they learn by getting things right. With this kit you can make it really easy for them.
The alphabet tray is designed so that you can quickly pick out the appropriate letters to give to a child or adult to 'make' the word they have struggled to read. If you give them the relevant letter cards helping if necessary by setting up double letter combinations, they will enjoy building the word using the letter sounds eg. m-ou-n-t-ai-n. In the process they will be increasing their ability to work out new words by sounding them out, and will also notice how the word is spelt and are more likely to remember it. Words known as 'tricky' words, that cannot be spelt phonetically, can be built by being copied from the text.
